Part 2

1930's
This era had more realistic portrayals of women, but they were still in drawing form, not photograph for the most part. There is a definite emphasis on the aristocratic, so advertising cheap products that are usually used by the wealthy. There is also still a lot about youth, and again most of these advertising pitches are made through writing and stories instead of through simply pictures, although there are slightly more images present than in the last decade. There is a slight mention of more sexuality, and that the goal of the products is to draw men to women, but it still seems as though that was a risky topic.

Advertisements Through the Ages, and How They Affect Women's Self Perception

1920's
Most of the advertisements from this era contain almost no photographs, and very few of them contain drawings. The adds for the most part concentrate on youth, and retaining or regaining it. There is also a considerable amount about how foreign products, foreign women and looking foreign is exotic, interesting, and attractive. One can see how many people are also encouraged to buy the products using the words in the ads (as often the pictures are abstract) and when there is an image it is usually a drawing, of a woman or of the product. It is interesting what use there is of words instead of photographs. There is very little about sexuality, or using these products to attain the attentions of men. There is also very little pressure to change your appearance to become skinnier or have different attributes.
